There’s a lot in life we tolerate.
We ignore the check engine light, give the stink eye to the socks our partners toss on the floor, put up with the critical friend, and mindlessly accept the annoyances that drain our energy. And we become numb to the negative impact these things have on our lives as they drag us down.
What’s Going on in Your Life Right Now that isn’t Quite the Way You’d Like it to be?
Maybe it’s the clutter all around your house. Or the oil that needs to be changed in your car. Or the 10 extra pounds you’ve dragged around for years.
Maybe it’s something bigger — like a home that doesn’t meet your needs, friends who are walking all over you or an abusive spouse.
These things in your life that are out of alignment are more than just annoyances.

They Drain Your Energy and Distract You From What Matters Most to You.
Imagine for a moment that each of these things you put up with in your life is a rock tied to your ankle. One or two of those rocks wouldn’t necessarily slow you down. But if there were 15 or 20, you’d probably have a hard time moving! Same with incompletions and tolerations. If they’re piling up and weighing you down, they can stop you in your tracks.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck in your life, I invite you to ask yourself this question: “What am I putting up with right now?” Make a list of at least five things in your home, work, relationships, and health.
Here are a few examples:
- Hormones that are running wild
- Messy closets
- Friendships that are not reciprocal
- A spouse who is verbally abusive
- Appliances that need to be fixed
- Able-bodied adult children who constantly need to be bailed out of financial difficulty
- A car that needs maintenance
- A job you hate
- Putting yourself last on your to-do list
- Fear of learning a new skill you KNOW will help you
If you’re having trouble making your list, use this tool to identify your challenging areas. Prioritize the ONE thing that’s making you the craziest. Then create an action plan to begin eliminating this nuisance from your life. Write down every step you need to take, no matter how small. When you’re finished, give your plan a confidence level from 0-10 (10=totally confident you can do it). If your confidence level is less than 7, break the plan into smaller steps to keep you out of overwhelm, then reassess your confidence.
When you’re finished, take action! All you need to do is take the first step (and then the next). It’s as simple as that.
